Course Description

Composition is often regarded as the cohesive arrangement of visual elements that comprise a  drawing. Using still life objects, this course provides the basics, and explores strategies that create a strong composition in a value drawing (as opposed to rendering individual objects). Strategies include groupings, shape repetition, creating a focal area through light and shadow and simplification. Master works are used as a point of departure when considering placement, focal point, lighting and eye movement. Some basic prior drawing instruction is helpful, and students may use limited color pastels if desired.
