Course Description

Students learn traditional Old Master techniques for portrait painting, beginning with a brief introduction to the anatomy and structure of the human head. Students begin by focusing on observational drawing and measurement techniques, using charcoal to develop an accurate depiction using comparative measuring. Transitioning into painting with a monochromatic grisaille study, students concentrate on value, form, and tonal rendering before an introduction to a limited color palette. Through a combination of direct painting and glazing techniques, students learn to build depth, luminosity, and realism in their portraits. By the end of the course, students gain a solid foundation in classical portraiture and a deeper understanding of the methods employed by many of history's greatest painters.
